An attorney for a 16-year-old North Charleston boy cleared in a murder case Friday said the teenager never should have been charged with tying up and killing a man earlier this year.
Citing a North Charleston Police Department probe, prosecutors dropped murder and kidnapping charges against the boy, Marcus Abdul Spann Jr., and an alleged accomplice, Deantre Rakeem Malik Maybank, 26.
Spann’s defense lawyer, Lauren Williams of West Ashley, said the two witnesses who had named Spann as Draco Istan Ali Ben Walker’s killer are both 6 years old, and one of them has vision problems. Their accounts were “highly questionable” and “immediately suspect,” she said.
